About

Hi, my name is Cristián Altamirano Ramos. I am a textile artist, originally from Chile and currently living in Sligo, Ireland.

During my studies in Chile, I had a fortunate encounter with textiles. Through material exploration and experimentation, I discovered a form of expression that resonated deeply with my personal history. I immersed myself in learning about dyeing, weaving, and developing an artistic language. As I progressed through studio exercises, I noticed my work often touched on themes like identity, poetics of nostalgia and memory.

In 2020, during the pandemic, I learned to knit with my mother. My drive to create found its perfect expression in knitting, and I haven't looked back since. I believe this holds profound significance in today's world, where there is an urgent need to live sustainably with our environment.

I believe in the power of textile crafts as a potent tool to foster community and interdependence. Let’s knit, crochet, and weave ourselves together!

On this website, you will primarily find my work in wool dyeing, the craft I have specialised in over the past few years. I will be working the colour ways in collections. My dyeing style is a work in progress, although expect a bit of green and orange, my favourite colours! Additionally, I am experimenting with natural dyes because I am interested in connecting what I can find in my environment and locally with my creative practice.

I have chosen to work with small quantities to ensure each skein receives the necessary attention. The materials I use are ethically sourced from mulesing-free sheep, and the dyes do not pollute the water, being mostly absorbed by the fibers. This commitment ensures my practice remains sustainable and respectful of the environment.
